Who Am I

Callum Speirs is a graphic design student who approaches projects in an experimental and analogue way. He also uses his knowledge of programs such as Adobe Photoshop to exaggerate depth, contrast, and texture in most pieces. Callum enjoys working in both maximal and minimal ways although his style is influenced heavily by designers such as Chris Ashworth and David Carson who emerged in a rebellious design era that linked to the alternative culture of the 90s. Callum enjoys trying to bend graphic design ‘norms’ and ‘rules’ and attempts to add his harsh, textured style to all his designs. Callum's enjoyment of the physical design process, as opposed to the digital standard, comes from his love for abstract art which he developed throughout his school life; he approaches design with a brash, vibrant, and artistic style. Although many modern design styles are polished and clean, Callum believes that an experimental mess of media both digital and traditional is necessary and shouldn’t be hidden from the final design but celebrated as it shows the story, initial ideas, and process of a piece. Overall Callum attempts to create a design that strays from current trends to make the viewer think about the design choices and question the intention with the intent to make a stronger, more memorable connection to the viewer.
